Last week my family said goodbye to a special person.

Her name is Cassie and she was only a few months from celebrating her 100th birthday.

She was my grand-aunt and the last of that generation in my extended family.

Her funeral was on probably the wettest day of the year, last Wednesday, in Dublin. But that didn’t stop a large crowd from turning out in the cold church to celebrate her life and say good-bye.

Cassie is someone you’d never forget once you met her.

She always had a sparkle in her eye and she was always curious as to what you were doing. And she had a great sense of humour- really great.

As I was sitting with her immediate family last week, listening to lovely stories about her, it really struck me how much she was loved and how lucky she knew she was.

She was someone who appreciated every day and had this incredible zest for life. Every day was an opportunity for fun and as we say in Ireland ‘a bit of devilment’.

This is someone who at one point was helping to deliver meals to old folks homes, and she was often older than the people she was helping!

I asked her a few years ago what her secret was to health, energy and happiness. Her answer said it all:

“I don’t bother with any of that stuff to do with vitamins and exercise. I have my own secret at the end of every day. I think about the fun I’ve had and the lovely people I’ve met. And then the best part is, I have a little drop of whiskey to close the day.”

And that is exactly what she did.

A super positive attitude. A genuine interest in people. And a zest for life that was unquenchable.

A special human being.

Inspiration comes in all sizes and I just wanted to acknowledge her spirit by sharing this short anecdote with you.

Best,

Shane
