Defying the Impossible – Mickelson And Bob Dylan

“I believed for a long time that I could play at this level again. I didn’t see why I couldn’t.” - Phil Mickelson Even if you’re not a fan of golf, you’d have to be inspired by the win of Phil Mickelson yesterday, who at the age of 50, and 3 weeks shy of his 51st birthday, became the oldest ever winner of a Major - the elite competition level of golfers worldwide. It could be a Roger Bannister moment for the sport. If you recall, he was the first person to break the 4 minute mile. But in the years that followed, many others followed his example. Why? Because the ‘belief’ that it was impossible had been smashed.

“I believed for a long time that I could play at this level again. I didn’t see why I couldn’t.”

– Phil Mickelson

Even if you’re not a fan of golf, you’d have to be inspired by the win of Phil Mickelson yesterday, who at the age of 50, and 3 weeks shy of his 51st birthday, became the oldest ever winner of a Major – the elite competition level of golfers worldwide.

It could be a Roger Bannister moment for the sport. If you recall, he was the first person to break the 4 minute mile. But in the years that followed, many others followed his example. Why? Because the ‘belief’ that it was impossible had been smashed.

It’s easy for doubt to creep in at any age. I have met 30 year olds who think they’re ‘’too old” to do something, and 80 year olds who think that anything is still possible – although the latter is more rare, unfortunately.

The quote from Mickelson above gives a hint as to something critical for anyone:

“I didn’t see why I couldn’t.”

In other words he wouldn’t let himself look at the reasons why he couldn’t. He didn’t get in his own way. A classic example of success truly being from within/out.

Another veteran, Bob Dylan celebrates his 80th birthday today and in his song ‘Gonna Change My Way Of Thinking’ he wrote:

“Gonna change my way of thinking,

make myself a different set of rules.

Gonna put my good foot forward

and stop being influenced by fools”

Whatever is in front of you, whatever you may have given up on, there should be inspiration in the above because the one thing we can control is the thinking we pay attention to.

Where does this apply to you this week?
