“When we discussed the candidates that we felt had the right attributes, we unanimously agreed on David Moyes.
David is a man of great integrity with a strong work ethic. There is no question he has all the qualities we expect of a manager at this club.”

– Alex Ferguson, outgoing manager of Man Utd., speaking about the new manager.

“I have been very impressed by David’s personal and managerial traits,  which reflect the Manchester United values. I have no doubt that he will embrace, and soon become an integral part of, United’s unique culture and heritage.”

– Man Utd.’s New chief executive, Ed Woodward

With all of the articles written over the past week on the retirement of Alex Ferguson, the above quotes caught my eye.

Whether you love him or hate him, you have to respect the fact that Alex Ferguson is the most successful football manager in English football.

Perhaps his greatest achievement are not the trophies he has won, but the legacy he has created.

When he first arrived in Old Trafford he spent time talking with all staff to try and discover what the ‘real values’ of this iconic club were. Then he set about building a team and club
that really embodied those values.

And whenever he felt they were compromised by a player,
he very quickly ejected them. The club was above any one player.

In selecting David Moyes, they have chosen a manager who has never
won a trophy. They seem to have based their decision on his values,
some of which are:

Integrity
Work ethic
Club before the individual
Build for the long term

More and more I see a focus on values being key in the success
of any organisation – and that includes a family!

When you get people around you who share similar values,
magic happens.

The hard bit, is taking the time (like Fergie) to figure out
what the real values are – and then being ruthless enough
to find the people who have them and ejecting those who don’t.

Time will tell if they have made the right decision in Moyes.

Big shoes to fill….

Have a great week.
