“People think focus means saying yes to the thing you’ve
got to focus on. But that’s not what it means at all.
It means saying no to the hundred other good ideas that there are.
You have to pick carefully.
I’m actually as proud of the things we haven’t done as the things I have done.
Innovation is saying no to 1,000 things.”
– Steve Jobs
I was running a productivity workshop for a business last week
and as usual the biggest problems identified by the managers present were:
– Lack of prioritisation
– Too much time on email
– Interruptions
– Too much ‘noise’
– Saying Yes to too much and not saying ‘No’ to more…
One answer in the short term is to get really clear on your top priorities – Top 5 to start with.
If you’re clear on where you’re going and why, it’s much easier to
say ‘No’ for starters.
And if like many people you’re saying ‘Yes’ to everything,
you’re probably going to end up moving 100 things forward an inch,
as opposed to 5 major things forward a mile.
It’s never been easier to be busy – but busy doing what?
When it comes to results, we need to think more in miles than inches…
What do you want to move forward a mile?
