Stop Driving With The Brakes On

“I hate where I’m at.” she said. “Tell me more”, I replied. She did and as she described it, it didn’t sound great. "So what are you going to do about it?” , I asked. Blank look, and this from someone who is smart and perceived to be very successful, strong and confident.

“When you get rid of your fear of failure, your tensions about succeeding…

you can be yourself.

Relaxed. You’ll no longer be driving with your brakes on.”

― Anthony De Mello

“I hate where I’m at.” she said.

“Tell me more”, I replied.

“So what are you going to do about it?” , I asked.

Blank look, and this from someone who is smart and perceived to be very successful, strong and confident.

They admitted they were afraid to do anything because they might fail. And the truth was they were stuck in the feeling of powerlessness.

Many people often create this self-imposed powerlessness. Usually it’s unconscious and they’re not aware of what they’re doing.

In this case, the person’s complete attention was going into ‘the fear’ without realising it and not to the one place it should be – their job or business.

They had stopped doing the actions that would change their circumstances.

Our minds are funny. If you really think about it, all problems are created there. But dwelling on the problem or the fear actually keeps it alive – which is what most do.

The above person, felt the fear and took action anyway – and of course, changed the external circumstances. But first she had to change her inner way of looking at the ‘problem’.

Do you have problems in your business or career?

Where is your energy going? Into the ‘problem’ or into the work in front of you?

Have you considered that you’re creating the problem through how you’re thinking about it?

And, today, this week, what are you going to do about it?
