The Critical Counter-Balance To Having Goals

“Some people are always grumbling because roses have thorns;

I am thankful that thorns have roses.”

–Alphonse Karr

Last week’s email titled ‘3 Simple Steps To Real Progress’, got a larger response than normal.

A few people called it a very clear and simple formula for success.

But I do think there is an important companion to it, which is hinted at in the above quote.

It is possible to become so focused on your goal(s) that it clouds what you have right now and can even make where you are unbearable. And you can miss the inevitable opportunities around you.

As someone said to me many years ago:

“Don’t make where you are wrong.”

It’s a form of mental dexterity – to have clarity on the end result you desire but be able to manage the inevitable internal friction because you’re not there yet.

The trick is to ensure we don’t let ourselves make ‘here’ wrong to the extent that we drag our mindset down. When we manage that we can see that some of our greatest gifts come out of our challenges.

What comes to mind is a quote by Ernest Hemingway:

“Now is no time to think of what you do not have.

Think of what you can do with what there is.”

This type of attitude cultivates a critical trait in enjoying meaningful success – Appreciation.

And the irony is that the more we appreciate (genuinely), the calmer we are and the better and more balanced our state is – which is better for achieving our goals!

This week, what can you do with what there is?

What can you appreciate more in what is with you already? (People, work, health, opportunity, clients, friends, skills)

How can you turn the reality of where you are into more opportunity?

Best,

Shane
