“There is not such thing as a ‘self-made’ man. We are made up
of thousands of others. Everyone who has ever done a kind
deed for us, or spoken one word of encouragement to us, has entered
into the make-up of our character and of our thoughts,
as well as our success.”
– George Matthew Adams
Last Friday was a big day in our household, as my daughter Jane had a graduation ceremony last from her primary (junior) school.
Even though I’m pretty much bed-bound with my Achilles’ injury I was fortunate to be able to make it for the service as I really didn’t want to miss this milestone.
It was a very touching event as the students shared their memories from their time at the school and celebrated their transition to secondary school (high school).
One of the special moments during the event was when the youngest members of the school individually said thank you to each of the 6th class students for their help.
The school has an interesting system where they pair 6th class students with new students (junior infants) as they arrive into the school in their first year. Their role is to look after them during breaks for the entire year.
You can imagine how intimidated very young children can be at a new school – and the intention was to help kids to settling faster.
The call it a ‘Big-Buddy’ system. And it has been very effective with the older students enjoying it as much as the younger, as they naturally enjoy helping others.
It made me think that we all need ‘Big-Buddies’ – people who are a little bit more experienced in certain areas.
I’ve often found that many people are slow to ask for help or support from another- especially when it comes to mentoring or coaching.
The reality is that when it’s done right, it’s very enjoyable and meaningful for both sides – just like with the kids at our local school.
What is your biggest priority or what is your no.1 challenge?
Maybe it’s time to find a ‘Big Buddy’ for yourself…?
Best,
Shane
PS – Many thanks for all of the ‘get well’ messages. They’re all appreciated.
