Ireland’s Changing Story

“The shortest distance between a human being and the truth is a story.”
-Anthony de Mello

Last Friday, I was fortunate to spend a day in the company
of probably the world’s leading expert in story.

The day was focused on how to use story to enhance your business
through 2 ways:

  1. Through more meaningful marketing
  2. and
  3. Through leadership – with your teams.

It was very powerful and thought-provoking.

At the same time, around Ireland a record number of people were turning
out to vote in the country’s referendum on same-sex marriage.

By Saturday at 7pm, Ireland had voted in a ratio of almost 2:1
to pass the referendum.

It’s amazing to believe that this small country has changed so
much over the past 30 years.

Regardless of the way people voted, what I found fascinating
was the amount of personal stories that were shared  in the
weeks leading up to the voting day itself.

They were emotional, real-life stories that touched people’s hearts.

Many pundits now identify that as the primary reason for the overwhelming
vote and turnout.

And the result will probably have a massive impact on the way Ireland
is perceived internationally – which is a great thing for business.

It’s also a reminder that you can change your story at any time.

The story of your business.

The story of your life.

As the story expert remarked

“Everyone in business and life is an author of their future.
The question is what story are they writing?”

A great question indeed.
