“You must welcome change as the rule but not as your ruler.”
– Denis Waitley
There is a story of a King plagued by worries and concerns.
Seeking wisdom, he called together the wisest people in his kingdom and asked them to create a guiding principle that would help him in times of challenge or distress.
It had to be short enough to be engraved on a ring so he could always see it. It also needed to be relevant in both prosperity and adversity—words that could offer wisdom for a lifetime.
The wise men and women went away to research, debate, and reflect. After many weeks, they returned to the King with their answer.
They explained that they had found words to fit all his criteria—words to ease the mind and heart in all situations. They were:
“This, too, shall pass.”
A simple phrase. Only four words.
Yet, profound in its truth.
I’ve often reflected on these words in times of pain and adversity—but also in joyful moments and times of success.
It’s a phrase that helps me to be more present, less caught up in my head, and more aware of what’s in front of me.
Wherever you are, whatever challenges life has placed in your path, and no matter what you are facing today, remember this: keep moving.
Life is change. Everything is transitory.
When times are tough, these words remind us that nothing stays the same. And when life is good, they encourage us to stay present and grateful, knowing that all moments are fleeting.
So this week, a reflection:
What might shift for you if you truly embraced the idea that everything—both the struggles and the successes—will eventually pass?
Best,
Shane
