There’s Only One Cause Of Unhappiness

When I work with clients in many ways I see myself like an inner explorer - searching for the one belief that is holding them back the most. There’s always something there.

“There is only one cause of unhappiness:
the false beliefs you have in your head,
beliefs so widespread, so commonly held,
that it never occurs to you to question them.”
Anthony de Mello

I’m fascinated by beliefs.

When I work with clients in many ways I see myself like an inner explorer – searching for the one belief that is holding them back the most. There’s always something there.

I’m also fascinated by my own beliefs because they change over time.

Consider that at one point, the majority of the planet believed these things:

The earth is flat
Flight is impossible
Radio waves were a thing of fiction
You can’t speak to someone on the other side of the world right now
Electric cars won’t replace fossil fuel cars
Yoga and meditation are the work of the devil (if you lived in Ireland anyway)

Funny how things change! You can add your own to the list I’m sure.
When it comes to ourselves, things can also get interesting.

For example:
I might believe I’m in great health until I get sick.
I might believe my core relationship is solid until my partner says they’re leaving.
I might believe I’m on the path to success until I get to the top and don’t like the view.
I might believe I’m not good enough and shut my potential down.
I might believe I’m better than everyone and unconsciously push people away.
I might believe I’m saving the world but really I’m just in my ego.
I might believe my team are fully aligned and on board with me until they start leaving.
I might believe I have no beliefs to be concerned about…:)

We all have beliefs.
Some serve us. Some don’t. Some serve the world. Some don’t.

If you really get into it, beliefs are made up of thoughts usually based on mental conditioning of some form. They are mental models for how we see the world. This means that they are made up.Which means they can always be challenged, tested and changed.

The important thing to remember is that we do have them and that they are impacting our experience of the world every minute of every day. But we have to remember that they really are just thoughts that we are VERY attached to. That doesn’t mean they’re actually true though.

It’s important to ask ourselves if we’re really open to reviewing our beliefs regularly?
– both in leadership and in all aspects of our life.

I don’t believe everything that I used to. I assume (or believe…) that you don’t either?
Maybe it’s time to do an inner ‘stock-take’ on some of your beliefs and consider those of the people around you?
One massive benefit is your level of happiness. Another is your ability to navigate life more effectively. It’s challenging inner work – but I ‘believe’ it’s worth it. 🙂
