“Exceptional people really do come to believe that
the journey is more important than the destination.”
Bob Rotella
I mentioned in a previous mail that I was at the first day of Pendulum Summit last week.
I have to admit that having ‘over-dosed’ on personal and business development seminars many years ago I was a little reluctant to attend – I mean, how many times do you have to hear the same messages?
But I admire what Frankie Sheahan the founder has done and I was happy to show my support.
I have to say I enjoyed being there and it was an event full of inspiration and learning – and of the many insights that were shared at the event, I’d like to share 2 with you.
The first was from someone who has inspired me over the years with his work and I was fortunate to get to meet him in person this year – Sports Psychologist and Mind Coach, Bob Rotella.
One of Bob’s many gems was to ask yourself this question:
How would I behave differently if I had cameras on me 24/7?
i.e. What would I change if I knew the world was watching me all of the time?
To me that’s a great question because if we knew there was nowhere to hide and that people were watching, most people I think would ‘up their game’ in all areas.
So why not pretend they are…? 🙂
The second was from Irish rugby legend, Paul O’Connell, who admitted to struggling to really understand what ‘being in the moment’ or ‘being mindful’ really meant on a practical level.
He had a breakthrough when his coach, Joe Schmidt, told him to stop over-thinking it and to just ‘Win the moment in front of you’.
So here’s a challenge for this week:
1. Pretend that cameras are on your every move this week. How will you behave differently?
2. Focus on winning the moment in front of you. (Clue: that means less thinking about)
Best,
Shane
