Gaining Control Or Letting Go?

“You do not need to know precisely what is happening, or exactly where it is all going. What you need is to recognise the possibilities and challenges offered by the present moment, and to embrace them with courage, faith and hope.” I know quite a few ‘control freaks’… :)

“You do not need to know precisely what is happening, or exactly where it is all going. What you need is to recognise the possibilities and challenges offered by the present moment, and to embrace them with courage, faith and hope.”

Thomas Merton

I know quite a few ‘control freaks’… 🙂

I recall a meeting with one several years ago where they were in the middle of a major problem for their organisation – the kind that could threaten its existence.

We were seated face to face in their office and were following up on a previous meeting, which had focused on clarity mind and the direct relation between how we think and our state of mind – and how we can influence it. It was a meeting that didn’t seem to have gone well.

But something had changed since that meeting and it was reflected in their body language. They seemed more relaxed and at ease.

As they looked me in the eye, they said “I give up.”

‘What do you mean?”, I replied.

Their answer was profound.

“I’ve realised that I’m thinking myself into a mind fog, and it’s not working. I don’t know where this is going to end up but I do know that if I keep over-thinking everything I won’t see what I need to.”

And that was the start of a major shift – both for the leader and the organisation. They had made a connection that most people don’t often see – how our thinking directly affects our feeling which ultimately affects our clarity of mind – which affects everything.

Unexpected events will always happen – in both business and life. They can often be very challenging and upsetting. And they can make us question ‘precisely what is happening’.

But in every moment there are new possibilities. And the good news is that they around you right now.

The bad news is that we might be trapped in the thinking that was a reaction to the unexpected event(s) and that doesn’t serve getting the best from the situation.

What area around are you ‘over-thinking’?

Maybe you can experiment with changing or dropping your thinking…

Sometimes letting go, is the best way to get control.

Best,

Shane
