“If you hear a voice within you
‘You cannot paint’,
then by all means paint and that voice will be silenced.”
– Vincent Van Gogh
Many people have a deep knowing of something better for them – either in their work or in their lives,
yet often hold themselves back from taking action.
Well we all have an inner voice, and interestingly even the top universities are looking at how best to
manage it, in the interest of more innovation, collaboration with a view to creating better organisations
And managing anything better first starts with being aware of it.
Researchers in MiT have identified 3 key voices to be aware of:
They are VoJ, VoC and VoF.
VoJ: Voice of Judgment (shutting down the open mind)
VoC: Voice of cynicism (shutting down the open heart)
VoF: Voice of fear (shutting down the open will)
The researchers have identified that your inner state is key to creating more genuine success – and
key to managing this inner state is your inner voice.
These voices exist for everyone to different degrees. And they can get amplified if we listen to and
watch the wrong people and media.
And the voice is always talking, commenting, saying something. And most people believe what it
says. And without realising it, can shut down their potential and ability to really transform situations.
The future is to become more aware about the limitations and insecurities of this voice.
This week, watch what your inner voice is saying in meetings or when you’re thinking about projects
or ideas you have. In particular, watch what it says in your closest relationships and personal
If you’e thinking is borne in one of the Vs above, it’s probably not enlightened thinking!
ps – The MiT research is almost 20 years in the making and has been focused on some of the most
innovative indiviudals, companies and organisations on the planet.
