I was chatting recently with a client in London about being okay with not getting the recognition for a change they had influenced.
You might be familiar with this scenario:
– You introduce an idea to make things better in an organisation or team
– It gets rejected by the key people and you’re told it will never work
– But you persist and eventually find clever ways to ‘influence’ the decision makers.
– Then the idea gets accepted and acted on.
– The idea makes a BIG impact but everyone forgets you had anything to do with it. 🙂
Sometimes it’s important to just do the right thing and not be concerned with the recognition. If it makes the organisation or society better, isn’t that what’s really important?
Who doesn’t like recognition? But if we’re real about it, it’s not always likely. The best leaders I know are okay with this and if they’re honest know that this will happen often. And it’s the same for your family, community, organisation and the world at large.
Doing the right thing isn’t usually easy and often you have to prioritise what’s best for ‘us’ instead of getting recognition for your ego.
We are seeing a world that is increasingly being challenged with dropping opinions and sides, and instead being challenged to do the right thing. For example, it will be interesting to see what happens in the US around gun control in the wake of the recent attack in Las Vegas.
If you have the ability to influence someone in authority or someone who has the power to change things, there probably has never been a more urgent time for you to step up and do the right thing.
Even and especially if you don’t get the recognition.
