“The grass is greener where you water it the most.”

Wolfgang Puck

I heard the above quote when watching a very interesting documentary on Disney Plus recently about the famous chef (simply titled ‘Wolfgang’).

The now 80 year old makes some very astute observations about his journey to becoming not only a famous chef, but someone who revolutionised many aspects about the way people view food and the food industry today.

For example the Austrian born chef pioneered the concept of the open kitchen, introduced the idea of food fusion to diners and shifted the public perception of chefs – changing the idea that they were simply blue-collar workers to where people now see them as innovators and creators.

The quote above was said when he was reflecting on working in a restaurant where he was the talent and draw – bringing in the customers in droves – but he believed he was being severely undervalued.

Many people told him to just quit and go elsewhere.

He noted that people always think the grass is greener somewhere else, but Puck said he believes “the grass is greener where you water it the most” i.e. make the most of where you are now and not just give up when things get difficult.

This attitude very much comes across in the documentary about his life and hints at one of the reasons for his success.

It’s easy to let your mind drift into ‘grass is greener over there’ mode if you let it.

To help avoid this, it’s useful to give it something else to focus on – like a question.

Here’s one for you:

Where will I water this week?
