“Getting the right people and the right chemistry is more important than getting the right idea.”
– Ed Catmull, Founder and CEO of Pixar Animation

Ed Catmull had the dream of making the world’s first computerised animation movie.  He succeeded with Toy Story and the rest is history.

In his book ‘Creativity, Inc.’ he goes behind the scenes to reveal how he and his team did it – and it was by no means straightforward or easy.

As of this year, Pixar’s movies have grossed over $9 Billion in sales, won 27 Oscars and were bought by Disney in 2006 at a valuation of $7.4 Billion! His book is a fantastic read and one of the best I’ve read in a long time.

He gives amazing insight into what it takes to make an idea come to life, to convert that into sales and most importantly how to keep the team motivated, balanced and energised.

One of his insights is the quote above – perhaps the opposite to what most people believe i.e. that the right idea is key.

He is adamant that if the people are right (feel respected, given autonomy, helped to live fulfilling lives etc.) then the right ideas will emerge from them. In my experience I see it the same way. So perhaps relate his quote back to you first.

How can you get yourself more ‘right’ this week? What 1 thing can you do?

Then with the key people around you (business & life), what can you do to help them enter more of the ‘right zone’?   Remembering that the chemistry is perhaps the most important when it comes to a team)

Have a great week.
