“Care about what other people think and you will always be their prisoner.”
– Lao Tzu
It’s useful to hear what others think – especially if it broadens your point of view, provides useful feedback to improve and or provides some great learning and insight. (Indeed many are not even open to the above…)
But caring too much about what people think of you is a different story and I think it’s a challenge we all encounter – especially when it comes to doing our best work and being true to ourselves.
When we care too much it can block the most important thing – action. What will ‘they’ think? My boss, the board, my business partner, my shareholders, my life partner, my friends, my family, my customers…
This attitude below is one I agree with:
“My philosophy is:
It’s none of my business what people say of me and think of me.
I am what I am and I do what I do.
I expect nothing and accept everything.
And it makes life so much easier.”
– Anthony Hopkins, Actor
Even though I have to work on it, the more I live by it, the better my life gets.
Maybe you’re the exception. But as a challenge, watch yourself this week to see if you’re stopping your own expression, creativity and innovation by ‘caring’ too much about what others think. There are big benefits to your life, career and relationships by caring less about what others think.
