“What is not started today is never finished tomorrow.”
— Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
Last week, I had the incredible opportunity to experience Coldplay’s “Music of the Spheres” tour. Among the many highlights was my first encounter with the light-up wristbands that illuminated the stadium, syncing beautifully with the band’s performance. This simple yet ingenious addition transformed the concert experience, making it truly unforgettable.
Intrigued by this brilliant concept, I delved into the backstory of these wristbands and discovered that they were the brainchild of Jason Riegler, a Coldplay fan. His inspiration struck in 2005 after witnessing the band perform “Fix You” live at the Glastonbury Festival.
Through a series of synchronicities an opportunity presented itself a few years later for Jason to meet the band and he shared his idea about the lights with Chris Martin and their manager Phil Harvey.
They liked the idea and a little later, decided to trial it at a gig in Madrid. And a new industry was created…
What I find interesting is that Jason’s journey didn’t start in the entertainment or tech industry. He originally worked in his family’s vehicle repair business for 17 years before realising that his passion lay elsewhere—in making, fixing, and creating things. This realisation propelled him to venture out on his own, eventually leading to collaborations with giants like Disney, Jim Henson, and Sony.
Here are three things that strike me from Jason’s story:
- It’s never too late to change direction: After 17 years in an unrelated field, Jason pivoted towards his true passion, proving it’s possible at any stage of your career.
- A single idea can have a massive impact: Jason’s concept has not only enhanced the concert experience for millions but has also been adopted by other major artists, amplifying its reach.
- Your unique ideas are valuable: What’s lingering in your mind, waiting for its moment to shine? Could your concept be the next to revolutionise an industry or craft unforgettable experiences? Or could it revolutionise your job or even better, your life?
This week, consider the potential of your own ideas.
What’s at the back of your mind (or front!) that you could bring out and take some action on?Challenge yourself to take one idea and this week to take a small step towards creating it. Whether it’s jotting down thoughts, starting a prototype, or discussing it with a friend, colleague or boss, every action moves you closer to making your idea a tangible reality.
Every big achievement begins with the courage to take a small action on an idea.
Best,
Shane
