Much In The Window But Nothing In The Room

“We have bigger houses but smaller families; more conveniences, but less time; We have more degrees, but less sense; more knowledge, but less judgment; more experts, but more problems; more medicines, but less healthiness; We’ve been all the way to the moon and back, but have trouble crossing the street to meet the new neighbour. We’ve built more computers to hold more information to produce more copies than ever, but have less communications; We have become long on quantity, but short on quality. These times are times of fast foods; but slow digestion; Tall man but short character; Steep profits but shallow relationships. It is time when there is much in the window, but nothing in the room.” - Dalai Lama Every now and then I come across words like the ones above that make me really stop, and reflect.

“We have bigger houses but smaller families; more conveniences, but less time;

We have more degrees, but less sense; more knowledge, but less judgment;

more experts, but more problems; more medicines, but less healthiness;

We’ve been all the way to the moon and back, but have trouble crossing the street to meet the new neighbour.

We’ve built more computers to hold more information to produce more copies than ever,

but have less communications;

We have become long on quantity, but short on quality.

These times are times of fast foods; but slow digestion;

Tall man but short character;

Steep profits but shallow relationships.

It is time when there is much in the window,

but nothing in the room.”

– Dalai Lama

Every now and then I come across words like the ones above that make me really stop, and reflect.

These words from the Dalai Lama will be ones I am going to reflect on all week and I’m keeping my own words short in this post, and would encourage you to perhaps read the above words again.

In a world that is obsessed with getting more and working relentlessly to get somewhere, it’s too easy to forget the real value of where are are and enhancing what is around us.

Where can you bring more substance into the ‘room’?

Have a great week.
