“You are what you do. Not what you’ll say you do.”
— Carl Jung
I was in a restaurant recently where the waiter said they’d do something for me—and then didn’t.
Who knows why—maybe they got distracted, maybe they forgot. But it got me thinking.
I’ve noticed a trend in recent years: many people, especially in busy environments, seem to struggle with follow-through. Whether it’s poor concentration, overwhelm, or just habit—it’s become surprisingly common.
And it reminded me of Jung’s quote above. Because I realised—I’m not immune to this either.
Do I do what I say I’ll do?
Sometimes yes. Sometimes… no.
Intentions are easy. Follow-through is the challenge. And when there’s a gap between what we say and what we do, it creates tension. Not just in relationships, but in ourselves. A quiet erosion of self-trust.
One of the simplest but most powerful ways to build confidence and momentum is this:
Say less. Follow through more.
So this week, a useful reflection:
- Where in your life or work are your actions slightly out of sync with your words?
- And what’s one small step you can take today to close that gap?
ANY reduction in that saying doing gap is well worth the effort.
Best,
Shane
