“You are not a drop in the ocean.
You are the entire ocean, in a drop”

I’m spending most of today at a Yacht Club in Dublin.
The focus is helping a client to re-energise and re-align their team on what matters most so that they set themselves up for a strong 2023.
I love the metaphor of being more like a yacht but I used to me more like a tank when it came to my work and life.
Both a tank and yacht can be focused on the same goal or destination, yet they have very different experiences and modes to get there.
A tank has a limited view and is usually one-dimensional i.e. set the target, acquire target. It can be very effective in getting to it’s destination but it’s not massively adaptable.
With a tank you’re also guaranteed that there will be collateral damage, usually yourself.
A yacht to me is more opportunity centric. To work, it needs to adapt to the weather or reality. It may set a goal or direction but it will find various ways to get there as obstacles emerge.
If you’re a team on a yacht a few things are reality:
1. You must respect and adapt to the weather
2. The best only happens when you perform well as a team
3. Each person on the yacht has to work on being at their best
Most people I meet are more like a tank than they’d like to believe. Both modes are useful but without doubt, one of them seems to be more in harmony with nature than the other – and that is worth reflecting on.
Which mode are you in? And which mode do you want to be in?
