“It is good to have money and the things that money can buy, but it’s good too, to check up once in a while and make sure you haven’t lost the things money can’t buy.”

George Lorimer

On the day this email goes out, I’m in the middle of hosting my annual leaders retreat, The Thrive Experience.

It’s 3 days out to step out of the busy-ness of life and work, to take stock on where you’re at in your journey and re-align to what matters most. The subject of happiness and fulfilment will be a key point at Thrive.

In our fast-paced world, it’s easy to get swept up in the pursuit of material success and all it entails. We often gauge our achievements by the quality of our cars, the size of our bank accounts, or the novelty of our gadgets, overlooking the intangible yet invaluable aspects of life.

Over the summer, I challenged some clients to completely disconnect from the office during their vacations i.e. no emails, no phone calls, no contact. For some, this was a first.

Those who embraced the challenge were amazed by the positive impact: they felt clearer and more relaxed, and their relationships with loved ones deepened. Being present allowed them to squeeze more connection and joy from their time together.

One big lesson I’ve learned the hard way is that happiness isn’t just a purchase, an achievement or a click away. The quote above serves as a powerful reminder to pause and consider what truly matters:

  • Healthy core relationships
  • Health
  • Positive state of being
  • Joy and purpose
  • A calm, clear mind

As you go about your week, perhaps consider these questions:

  1. What are the things in your life that money can’t buy?
  2. How can you make more time for these things in your day and week?
  3. What changes can you make to better balance your financial goals with the need for personal fulfilment?

Ambition drives progress but the danger if it’s unchecked is it drives us too far into the zone of the ‘More monster’ who can only say one thing:

It we’re not careful we lose sight of the things that matters most. The things that are truly priceless.

Best,

Shane
