“Your disposition in life is more important than your position in life.”
– Jimmy Carr
I heard the above line recently in an interview with the comedian, who surprised me with his wisdom and insights to living a great life.
The above line made me pause the interview and reflect.
It’s a beautiful insight in just one sentence. How we are — our mood, our
presence, our internal state — usually matters more than any title we hold,
milestone we hit, or role we play.
In business in particular, I’ve often noticed people taking things far too
seriously. It’s almost like seriousness becomes the default badge of
importance. You’re not seen as credible unless you’re carrying a heavy tone,
a tight face, and a furrowed brow.
But I get it.
There’s pressure. Targets. Deadlines. People to lead.
I can wear that face myself — in business, at home, even with myself.
But over the years, I’ve come to realise something simple but powerful:
A light mind is a high-performing mind.
Lightness isn’t flippancy.
It’s presence. Agility. Perspective.
And often, it’s a sign of an evolved inner world — one that doesn’t need to
control every outcome, be right in every conversation or tense up at every
twist in the road.
These days, I use my level of seriousness as a kind of dashboard warning light.
When I catch myself getting too tense or grim, it’s often a sign I’m thinking too
much… and being present too little.
So this week, a reflection:
Where are you taking things too seriously?
And what might happen if you let a little more light in?
Best,
Shane
