“The best way to predict the future is to create it.”
– Peter Drucker
In 1999, I held my first-ever solo workshop in my hometown of Kilkenny, in the South East of Ireland. I was beyond excited to share the best of what I’d discovered about using the mind for success over the previous 5 years.
Back then, it was a very different world—pre-internet, pre-mobile phones, pre-mindset. To get the word out, I placed a small ad in the local paper, The Kilkenny People. That was the extent of my “marketing strategy.”
I imagined speaking to a packed room of people eager to learn.
6 people showed up.
And 2 of them were a little… unconventional, to say the least.
I still remember some of the comments I got from locals around that time. Let’s just say they weren’t exactly encouraging. In fact, one person even accused me of trying to start a cult. (Looking back now, I can laugh, but at the time, I didn’t find it so funny.)
It was a reality check as to where most people were at – at least in Ireland.
Fast-forward 25 years, and the world has changed dramatically—especially when it comes to the mental and inner side of life and performance. Most of what I shared that night has become mainstream. What was once dismissed as “out there” or “fringe” is now widely accepted and embraced.
Here are just a few shifts I’ve witnessed:
- Sport psychology has moved from niche to mainstream, transforming how athletes prepare and perform.
- There’s a growing recognition of the power of the unconscious mind and its role in decision-making, creativity, and success.
- We’ve seen an explosion in neuroscience, mindfulness, and meditation practices—now seen as tools for everyone, not just scientists or monks.
- Leaders are increasingly open to exploring the “inner game,” realising how mindset, clarity, and emotional intelligence drive results.
- Mental health awareness has taken huge strides, leading to more openness, conversations, and support.
- Entire careers have emerged around coaching, mindset, and the inner world—roles that barely existed 25 years ago.
- Psychology itself is undergoing a renaissance and there’s more to come.
I can’t predict exactly what the next 25 years will bring, but one thing is clear: the pace of change is only going to accelerate. The intersection of human potential, technology, and mind is deepening, opening up new possibilities we can’t yet imagine.
But 25 years is a long time to think about.
So let’s zoom in.
What about your next 3 years?
- What could your life, your work, your health, and your relationships look like 3 years from now?
- What would it take to elevate how you think, perform, and live—not in 25 years, but in the next 3?
- And perhaps most importantly: What small but meaningful steps can you take today to set that future in motion?
The inner game—your mindset, focus, clarity, and emotional resilience—is the foundation for any transformation. It’s what I’ve dedicated my life’s work to, and it’s why I’m still as passionate about it today as I was in 1999.
This week, I challenge you to pause and reflect on your next 3 years.
Don’t be distracted by the volatility and uncertainty around you. Don’t let life drift by. Be intentional. Create your vision—especially one that seems impossible.
Because if there’s one thing I’ve learned over the past 25 years, it’s this:
We are all capable of far more than we imagine—if we give ourselves permission to believe, to act, and to grow.
Here’s to your expanded success in the next 3 years.
Best,
Shane
