“The happiest people don’t have the best of everything,
they make the best of everything.” – Unknown
“Don’t look for happiness in outcomes.”
A mentor of mine said this to me many years ago, and I’ll be honest, it didn’t make sense to me.
‘But when I get ‘x’, I will be happier’, was my thought.
I used to believe that achieving certain goals or milestones would inevitably lead to happiness. It was flawed thinking, that I realised only after achieving numerous significant outcomes in my life. Interestingly, I observed the same truth with many of my clients – despite reaching their ‘dreams’, or removing a big problem, they often found themselves lacking the happiness they had anticipated.
It’s an idea that challenges the prevailing belief that success and happiness are synonymous.
Many in the business world might scoff at the idea, believing that success requires sacrificing happiness. Yet, I’ve come to understand that while some may succeed amidst misery, they ultimately suffer a worse fate.
The truth is, when we fixate on future outcomes as the source of our happiness, we neglect the beauty and richness of the present moment. It’s an irony that escapes many:
By focusing on our state of being today, we not only increase the likelihood of achieving our desired outcomes but also derive greater fulfilment from life itself. After all, isn’t that the ultimate goal?
This week, I encourage you to reflect on these questions:
Where in your life are you seeking happiness solely in outcomes? And how might shifting your focus to your state of being in the present moment enrich your overall well-being and success?
Best,
Shane
