“It is our attitude at the beginning of a difficult task which,
more than anything else, will affect its successful outcome.”
– William James
“Is it wrong that I’m enjoying this so much?”
This was said to me in the middle of the pandemic by a business owner in the hospitality sector.
As you know hospitality was one of the hardest hit industries when the pandemic struck and his business was right in the middle of it.
If ever there was a time that showed the power of the right attitude, it has been the last 2 years.
This leader has been a great example of adapting to reality and seeking out the opportunity in disruption. They created new ways of doing business and new products – some that failed and some that worked.
In the same week, I’d had a separate conversation with another business owner in the hospitality sector but they had a very different mindset.
“We’re screwed. I don’t think we’ll survive this.”
In most cases they were similar compared to each other BUT the one area they were different, was the one that mattered most – their attitude. And that’s one of the main reasons their business had to close.
For the first leader, it was the challenge of the situation that ignited the life within him. The second leader was threatened by the challenge and they thought I was crazy when I questioned their mindset. To him, I was ignoring reality.
Both were in pretty much the same circumstances, but both reacted very differently to it. Both had sleepless nights, high stress and drama but one adapted and innovated. The other stagnated and raised their fist to the sky asking “Why me?”
The Victim Vs. The Victor
Everyone, even the best of the best, can get caught out in their attitude.
The question is are we even checking to see what it is?
