What a game.
I hadn’t intended on writing about the World Cup today but after witnessing what has to be the greatest final ever, I feel I have no choice!
In a year of mighty challenges globally, it was a gift to watch the gladiatorial contest that was delivered up to us yesterday.
This has been the story of two World Cups in one. The first is the story of greed, corruption and of under-valuing human life. The second is the story of football and of Messi. The genius who had won everything bar ‘the big one’. Could he finally win the elusive trophy?
It’s this second story that I choose to focus on today following what has to be the greatest World Cup final ever.
Messi, despite being 35, delivered all the way through this tournament. His career is an example of what can happen incredible talent meets hard work, focus and a ‘never give in’ attitude.
Behind Messi though was the Argentinian team, the young manager and his committed staff. They were the enablers of Messi’s magic.
Tactically, the manager was incredibly flexible when it came to the team formation throughout the tournament. The work rate from every single player, especially in the final, was relentless. Un-proven players ‘stepped up’ over the last few weeks to give the manager no choice but to play them.
In a world that has many dark stories, yesterday we were given a fairytale, Hollywood ending – in the most dramatic fashion.
A reminder that persistence can pay off. That the sports biggest prize is rarely won by the team with the best players, but usually by the best team.
It was also a glorious reminder that despite setbacks, challenges and unexpected events, great things can happen – IF we never give up.
A useful reminder as we come to the end of an interesting year globally.
