Following the Feeling: My Journey Back to Inspire Me

“Don’t wait for inspiration. It comes while working.”

Henri Matisse

When I was on my vacation, one day I was relaxing by the pool and something hit me.

“Record an audio version of Inspire Me.”

Inspire Me was my first book, published in 2011. When it came out, audiobooks weren’t really a thing—not in the way they are now.

My inner critic chimed in a few seconds later.

“There’s no point in doing that now. It’s too late. Work on something new and different.”

But it was too late. My Inner CEO had got the message, and if I know anything, it’s that I need to follow that ‘Feeling’ that comes with certain ideas.

Not all feelings are created equal in my experience, and I’ve had too many times in my life when I ignored that ‘Feeling’ to my regret.

So early this morning, I started recording the audio version of ‘Inspire Me’. The plan is to have it fully done by the end of July, with the intention of being available for download on September 1st.

What’s interesting to me is that I have absolutely no attachment as to whether the book will sell copies in this format. It’s not about creating something to make money. What I love is the way I feel when I’m working on the project—a feeling of flow, creativity, and fun.

I’m realizing more and more that this ‘Feeling’ is what most people are missing. We often get so caught up in the grind and the pursuit of outcomes that we forget to enjoy the process of working on something we enjoy.

So maybe this week, you could pick one thing to work on, not because it’s urgent or because it will make you money, but because it brings you joy and satisfaction.

What project or activity could you dive into this week that would give you that feeling of flow and creativity?

Best,

Shane
