Keeping The Fire Within Alive

“The mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a fire to be kindled.”

Plato

Back in March, I sent a survey out to people on my mailing list about the inner side of business and leadership. The results were very revealing as people were very open in sharing their perspective.

One of the key findings from the survey is that the average mood level of those surveyed, for the last 6 months, is lower than I think most would expect. I think this is very telling because your mood is an indicator to the ‘fire within’ i.e. the fuel that energises us for daily engagement.

As the Plato quote above touches on, when the mind gets over-filled (with thinking, knowledge and analysis) the flames within can be quenched.

I remember a time in my mid-20s when my personal fire nearly went out. It was the most challenging time but also a great gift – because it woke me up to the reality of having to be the custodian and protector of my own inner flames.

It’s vital to nourish the fire inside us in the same way we help a real fire to burn. Give it the right environment, the right kindling, the right amount of space to breathe – and of course the spark to light it.

In today’s 24/7, always on, busy busy world it’s all to easy to forget that a mind that’s full, isn’t the best way to get the best out of ourselves and others.

Where this week can you grow the fire within?

What can you do today to create a little more space for the inner flames to grow?

Best,

Shane
