“I try not to think about the past or future too much. I love trying to live in the present. I’m going to continue to put in the work that’s got me here. That’s pretty much it”

Scott Scheffler (US Masters Champion 2024)

You don’t need to be into golf to get value from the above statement, in my opinion.

In winning the coveted green masters jacket yesterday evening, Scott Schefller became only the 5th person to win the unqiue major twice before turning 28.

His statement is a pointer to getting the best out of yourself in any context – business, sport or life. But it takes work. Real inner work.

Living in the present has become a cliched catch-phrase that means different things to different people. But it’s a philosophy that transcends any particular domain. Whether it’s on the golf course, in the office, in a meeting or at home with family, the ability to focus on the present moment profoundly impacts our performance AND well-being.

What does it take to cultivate this mindset of living in the present?

I think it starts with placing a real value on it first, which brings with it the challenge of commitment and dedication.

When you first start to explore this part of your inner world, you realise how much we are in our thinking vs. really being in the moment. The truth is our thinking is often (unconsiously) caught up in the noise of past regrets and future worries.

Living in the present means dropping that thinking.

It means throwing ourselves whole-heartedly into whatever task or interaction is in front of us, without letting distractions pull us away. This isn’t as easy as it sounds!

But it’s possible.

This week, let’s remember Scott Scheffler’s words and commit to putting in the work to live more fully in the present.

After all, the present moment is where life happens, and it’s up to us to make the most of it.

Best,

Shane
