“What are you looking through?”

My client looked at me with a withered expression that told me they were going to:

A. Punch me or

B. Ask ‘What do you mean?’

Thankfully B was the chosen option…

We had been discussing mindset, the power of our thinking and the fact that our minds automatically throw up ‘filters’ around everything in our lives – the people we interact with, our circumstances and events around us.

We see what we look through.

A simple example would be around the people we interact with. You like Person 1 but you don’t like Person 2. So you automatically treat them differently. Through your tone, body language, how you react, your assumptions about them, how open you are. The list goes on.

In your mind there will be a perfectly good reason why you like one person and not the other. But it’s still a filter. And that filter hugely influences your behaviour and so what happens.

One of the most valuable inner skills to develop is the ability to detach from your filter. Not ignore it, but to almost suspend it ‘in air’ so that it doesn’t own you.

In the case of my client, they realised that they had very negative filters on a couple of people, and that it was massively influencing their behaviour which was compounding tricky situations. They caught it though and it allowed them to navigate more effectively through ’choppy waters’.

What filters do you have today?

  • About your work
  • About your goals or purpose
  • About your life
  • About your income/earnings
  • About the people around you
  • About yourself!

Don’t fall into the trap of thinking you’re immune to filters—we all have them. The difference lies in our choice to not blindly accept them as absolute truths.

We see what we look through.

What are you looking through?

Best,

Shane
