“The most powerful weapon on earth is the human soul on fire.”

Ferdinand Foch

Last week, while speaking at an event, I delved into the importance of carving out time for inner space, a sanctuary for stoking the ‘fire within.’

In our lives, the ‘fire within’ is symbolic of aliveness, purpose, and spirit.

Neglecting it can lead to burnout, loss of direction, or a sense of being consumed by the demands of daily life.

I can vividly recall a time when the flame inside me was nearly extinguished. Life’s demands, challenges, and the relentless pace had taken a toll and without realising it my mind had turned on me. It’s was the toughest time of my life and I learned the danger of letting my inner fire go out.

In today’s busy distracted world, it is an increasingly common story. About 65% of people are on the edge of burnout.

65%!!

There are many factors contributing to this scary statistic and one of them is the complete lack of space inside people’s minds. They are hyper-busy and believe that’s the way it has to be.

The concept of making time for inner space isn’t just a philosophical notion; it’s a pragmatic necessity.

Just like a fire needs oxygen to burn brightly, our inner flame requires moments of calm, solitude and reflection.

Consider this: when a fire is tended to regularly, and given the space to breathe…it not only survives but thrives. Too many logs, too little space, can kill the fire. This is what I see when it comes to a mind that is relentlessly busy with thinking.

So, this week, I encourage you to reflect on the state of your inner flame:

  • When was the last time you intentionally made space for yourself?
  • What activities rekindle your passion and sense of purpose?
  • How can you integrate moments of solitude and self-reflection into your routine?

It’s not selfish to nurture your inner flame – it’s the complete opposite. When you have a healthy fire, it makes what you touch turn to gold.

And it sparks life in others.

What better investment is there?
